The prospect of a winter World Cup in Qatar is drawing ever nearer, with the tournament likely to take place in November or December.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter said that the tournament would not take place in January or February because of the Winter Olympics.
“It is logical to play this competition at the end of the year. We cannot have two competitions at the same time,” said Blatter.
“It will be November-December; I don’t know exactly the dates, but it could be from 10th to 10th whatever.
“In January and February, these are the Olympic Winter Games.
“It is out of the respect to the Olympic organisation – the Olympic family. Secondly, we have practically the same media, television and marketing partners.”
Blatter has also ruled out the prospect of Qatar co-hosting the event, having previously suggested that the United Arab Emirates or Iran may be able to host matches.
“The decision of the FIFA is to play in one country and that will be in Qatar,” Blatter told a news conference after meeting the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.
